Common Chimney Issues We Solve
Because chimneys are difficult to inspect from the ground, problems often go unnoticed until they cause interior damp or structural concerns. We specialise in:
Failing Mortar: High winds and driving rain wash away soft mortar joints, leading to loose bricks and potential collapses.
Blown Brickwork: Frost damage often causes chimney bricks to “spall” or flake, especially on the side facing the prevailing wind.
Leaking Flashing: We inspect and repair the leadwork where the chimney meets the roof to prevent water ingress into your loft space.
Crowning & Pot Issues: If the “flaunching” (the concrete cap at the top) is cracked, water can pour down the internal flue, causing damp patches on your bedroom walls.
Our Chimney Services
1. Full Chimney Repointing
Using either lime mortar for period properties or high-strength cement for modern stacks, we rake out and repoint the entire structure. This reinforces the stack against the elements and prevents the need for a costly rebuild.
2. Chimney Rebuilding & Stabilization
If a chimney has become dangerously unstable or “leaned” due to age, we can carefully dismantle the stack and rebuild it using the original bricks (where possible) to maintain the architectural integrity of your home.
3. Flaunching & Pot Replacement
We remove cracked, failing concrete caps and apply a new, smooth “flaunching” to shed water away from the flue. We can also source and install traditional terracotta chimney pots to match the style of your neighborhood.
4. Brick Replacement & Tinting
We replace individual weathered bricks at height, ensuring a perfect color match so the repair is invisible from the ground.
